It gives a glossy finish and is non- yellowing when used on light colored surfaces. You can also opt for Minwax polyurethane or Minwax polycrylic to work on the finishing. We have rustic birch floors and they are quite soft, they took a beating to upstairs, moderate use.

I cannot thank you enough for doing this experiment and sharing it! I am limited on cabinet space so I am doing diy open shelves in our kitchen and I just knew your blog was the place to go for tips on mixing wood tones! We’re in a rental so we’re stuck with the very dark mahogany cabinets with brushed silver hardware. They’re not bad and look nice but not my color of choice. I’m loving the simply white on the pine but I was hoping to get your opinion!? Oh and I’m spraying the shelf bracket flat black.

It may take up to two days to dry and unlike Minwax that will be tacky two weeks later, Rustoleum Ultimate will dry. Lowes used to carry it and they no longer carry in stores but online. —They carry Rustoleum Ultimate and I use it for all my wood staining and many other things are well. It can work miracles for reviving old furniture without having to strip and sand. Note that going darker produces a better result than going lighter.

  • Honestly, I don’t think I would ever choose to stain maple black!
  • Should I layer a bit of white and with a gray that I wipe off quickly?
  • It gives a glossy finish and is non- yellowing when used on light colored surfaces.
  • For outdoor projects, such as staining a porch or deck, you’ll need a product like the Ready Seal Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer.
  • Most wood stain needs to be applied with a paintbrush, but for small projects, you can simply use the Minwax Wood Finishing Cloths.
  • At any time during the process, it’s recommended that you not use steel wool, because it can leave small particles that will rust in the finish.
  • If the furniture is already made accept it for what it is and don’t try to turn it into something it isn’t.

Thin-bodied stains don’t have this problem because they wick into tight spots and the areas adjoining them. And, because gel stains don’t penetrate as well as thin-bodied stains, they don’t bring out the “depth” of the wood grain as well as thin-bodied stains. That’s why we prefer thin-bodied stains for porous woods such as oak, ash, mahogany, and walnut. Apply its thick consistency to horizontal tabletops or vertical cabinet framework, fine woods or those notoriously difficult to cover evenly. When you’re ready to get started, pick up with Step 1 of this helpful tutorial for staining wood. You’ll see for yourself how gel stain combines the uniformity of paint and the depth options of stain—all in one small can.

Old Masters Wiping Stain

In the process of building a house and the trim color really has me struggling. I’m having pine wood and can’t decide to have it painted white or go with a stain. I’m having white cabinets/white granite with greyish Island, and butcher block counters and white windows. White scares me with upkeep/kids but afraid stain won’t go with design I’m going for.

Easily rub back and forth a long the direction of the wood. It completely removes the tackiness and gives you an ultra smooth finish. Just remember to use a tack cloth afterwards to pick up any left over steel particles on the wood. I actually use this grade steel wool between every coat of stain, it gives it a perfect end finish that way. Overall, the Minwax True Black wood stain performed really well! You could probably get away with just one coat with most types of wood.

Minwax Gel Stain

Both Minwax and Varathane are excellent choices for staining and preparation. One of the big draws of water based polyurethane is that it doesn’t have much of a smell and it dries quickly. Oil-based polyurethane, on the other hand, is known for its distinct aroma.

I am working on building a drawer with fresh wood and like the original poster had to leave quickly before wiping excess stain off the drawer facing. Is using mineral spirits the only option left? Sad thing is, its the perfect color and a darker stain isn’t available – if it weren’t for being stick/ tacky/ shiny I’d just put the finish on it. The rest of the pieces all turned out beautifully, if only i’d have wiped the excess off this piece too! I’m a bit concerned that using mineral spirits will lead potentially to an even bigger mess or that the color won’t be close to the other pieces in the set. If almost all the stain comes off when you wipe it, the surface probably wasn’t sanded enough.

Dilute your oil based polyurethane with mineral spirit and apply long even strokes of the liquid on the surface. Honestly, I don’t think I would ever choose to stain maple black! General Finishes gray gel stain on maple is one of my favorite combos, and I’m surprised at how disappointing the black version turned out. If I had to choose, I think I’d pick the Varathane stain because it allows some of the grain to show through with even coverage throughout. One of the benefits of gel stain is that it’s really easy to work with, and the General Finishes black gel stain was no exception.

It’s more of a challenge going from dark to light but you could always try to apply the lighter gel stain on an inconspicuous area and see how you like it. I’m guessing it would be more of a ‘washed’ look rather than lighter wood stain. Before we moved into our home the builders stained the hand railings a red stain which looked awful with the floor. They did not lightly sand the glossy finish, nor did they put on a top coat. I’m sure you can imagine the mess we have now. Globs of gel stain where the kids ran their hands down the railing.

It takes some practice to learn how to use it. There are no worries about drips and runs—even when staining vertical surfaces—when you work with Minwax Gel Stain. The product provides uniform color in 12 shades (e.g., chestnut, coffee, and hickory) and can be used on either interior or exterior wood .

Another possibility is that the stain was old or came from a bad batch. Debris trapped up in polycrylic will create an uneven finish. It works well over standard latex varathane vs minwax stain paint but not over matte latex. The additives in matte paint keep the “easily dried” polycrylic from drying up. It remains runny leaving behind cracks when dried.

We’re going to talk Gel Stain, Water Based Stain and Oil Stain. You are also able to darken the finish by adding additional coats until you get the color you need. This is General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain and Satin Arm-R-Seal for a top coat on Quarter Sawn White Oak. I don’t normally use stain but in this case I was looking for something specific in the final color. Regarding conditioner, this depends on the species of plywood you got. Not sure why you would even consider a primer.

Even my favorite grey wood stain only looks truly grey in light tones like maple. I wanted to see if the same effect occurred with black wood stain. I’ve lived in a log house for the past 30 years. I was told initially that the paraffin, linseed, thinner mix was a good exterior finish. After a couple years of Michigan exposure, the logs turned virtually black.

Gel Stain Drawbacks

They are a time saver because you don’t have to strip and sand down to bare wood to start from scratch. Gel Stains can totally transform an existing finish so you can save $$$ on DIY rather than buying new cabinets or furniture. And YOU control how light or dark you want the finish. Lightly sanded and stained a dining table top with oak stain, let dry and did a second coat and let dry.

No matter what you use after you get a clear coat on you’ll need to scuff it out to get a smooth finish. The final result is going to depend on the wood, the stain and the topcoat as a system. Once the colour is right, you can focus on getting a good seal coat without worrying about applying too much or too little colour. My problem is the gel’s dry to fast to allow me to add grain impressions. My favorite topcoat is General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Flat finish.

Sunbleached By Varathane

Well, I wish I had checked into your information first, but I think this will work out for me. In the future, I’ll make sure to apply the stain in a very thin layer–. And I’ll refer to your website for more advice as well.

I know this is an old thread and there is a lot of great information and points here, but my opinion the Varathane seems to be slightly thicker than Minwax. It also coated much more evenly and did not soak in so quickly like a sponge . It coated evenly and the colors appear deeper to me than Minwax products. I thorough wipe after a few min. is necessary for proper drying.

With that said home owners will not only not have access to Hummels and the like, Home owners also do not know how to run any of the machines correctly nor should they. How many times have you hit the internet seeing home owners running and edger from right to left? Or running the belt or drum sanders from right to left. How many times have you seen home owners start with a 24 grit then go to 80 then 120? Heck how many times have you seen pros do that? In both instances situations like that happen all the time.

Looking for color and depth without covering up all the grain and character that make wood uniquely attractive? Gel stains offers a great option for DIYers who can’t quite decide between staining and painting, since it offers something in between. Semi-opaque—imparts deep color and obscures most of the wood grain. I love the looks of Puritan Pine and Weathered Oak on the pine – I think they bring out the grain while still adding interesting color to the wood. It is light gray in color and has a lot of white undertones. I think that Briarsmoke goes on really easily, but it can kind of hide the wood grain in certain wood types.

If you’re worried about the fumes, a respirator mask would be a great idea. However, when possible, try to use this product in a ventilated area. You can add a fan facing out of the room or open a few windows too. If you cannot properly ventilate the site, make sure it’s clear of other people without a mask before applying. Perhaps you want a finish that will make the room feel more open and brighter.
